How To Keep Your Home Safe When You're Away on Vacation

Going on vacation is a great way to remove some stress from your life and have a great time enjoying your family, experiencing new activities, and dining at some great locations. As pleasant as the vacation can be, it’s also important to make sure that you are safe while you are away. Most people already know they have to keep safe while traveling and need to keep their wits about them no matter where they go. They know enough to be careful while they are away. However, they might not always consider the safety of their actual home while they are gone. USA Today stresses just how important this can be as well.

You do not want to come home to any terrible surprises, such as the aftermath of a burglary. The following are some ideas that you might want to use when you are on vacation. They can help keep your home safe.

When Is the Vacation?

As soon as you know the dates of your vacation, it is a good idea to start planning for your home’s safety while you are away. Perhaps the best way to do it is with a security system. A good security system will monitor for break-ins as well as fire and flood, and it will do so 24hrs a day. The prices of the systems are much lower than they once were, and they may fit into your budget. If you do not want to get a security system, or if they cannot install it before you leave, you still have a number of other options that you can use to keep safe.

Your Mail and Paper

The conventional wisdom used to be to stop mail delivery and paper delivery before leaving on vacation. This way, the items would not pile up on your doormat and in your mailbox. However, experts in the aforementioned USA Today article now say this might not be a good idea. When stopping mail and the paper, it lets people in those offices know you will be out of town. While they might be perfectly fine, the fewer people who know all of your plans and your dates away the better. Instead, it is a good idea to have someone that you trust come by to check on the house, pick up the mail and bring in the papers each day.

If they can’t get there every day, they should be able to do it at least every other day. Alternatively, it’s possible to have a second person come and take care of things. A rotating schedule amongst two of your closest and most trusted family or friends might be a good option.

Check Your Security

How secure is your house? Whether you are going on vacation or not it is important to make sure you are in a secure home. Check all of the windows and doors to see whether any of them have faulty or broken locks. If they do, replace them right away for maximum safety.

Good Lighting

You should have good lighting inside and outside the home, and you should set it up on timers. Have the timers throughout the house set to different times, so it looks as though someone is actually going through different rooms of the house at different times during the evening. Outdoor motion lighting is good as well. Have this type of lighting in the front yard as well as the backyard. This can alert your neighbors if there are any strangers lurking around your home after dark.

Keep Your Vacation Plans Quiet

While you might want to tell all of your friends and family about your vacation, it’s a good idea to keep your travel plans quiet. Only let a handful of your most trusted confidantes know. Even though you can probably trust your friends and family implicitly, you never know whom else they might tell without thinking about it. Those other people that you do not know might not be as trustworthy.

Finally, you are going on vacation. Have a great time and stop worrying. If you take precautions, your house will be fine while you are away. Enjoy your time relaxing and unwinding in your timeshare!
